Donald Trump criticizes ‘political’ decision to leave ‘Wonderful’ One US News
Donald Trump has criticized Verizon’s decision to leave the right-wing network One America News (OAN).
Verizon confirmed last week that it would stop showing OAN on its Fios television service starting July 31.
The move means that OAN, a staunch pro-Trump channel that has been accused of promoting the former president’s baseless claims about the 2020 election, is left with almost no television provider.
Trump took to his Truth social platform, which was launched after being banned from Twitter and other sites following the January 6 attack on the US Capitol, on Sunday morning to describe Verizon’s decision as “purely political”. .
He wrote, “One America News (OAN) is amazing, has great ratings and really loyal followers.”
“Despite being so cool, VERIZON, for purely political reasons, will be phasing out OAN at the end of this month. Isn’t this ‘stuff’ considered illegal?”
Trump said that “the good news is that the owners and management of One America News are smart and very intelligent. They’ll figure it out!”
Verizon Fios was the largest pay-TV provider carrying OAN even after DirecTV refused to renew contact with the network earlier this year, according to daily animal.
The outlet previously reported that Verizon was leaving OAN after not being able to reach an agreement with the network’s owners.
“Our negotiations with OAN have been a normal, business-like manner of carriage negotiations that regularly take place between content delivery and content providers,” a Verizon spokesperson said in a statement.
“These talks were focused on economics as usual, but OAN failed to agree on fair terms.”
Several organizations had prompted major carriers to drop OANs.
Verizon’s move means OAN “will often be left without a major carrier for spreading harmful and dangerous propaganda and baseless conspiracy theories,” said Yosef Getachev, the media and democracy program director of Common Cause, a government watchdog group. he said.
“This is a welcome change but is long overdue.”
Getachev said: “We hope that the remaining small pay-TV providers and streaming services are still carrying OAN and are deprived of any platform outlets to spread harmful conspiracy theories that harm the real world. Any company should not profit from spreading such material which is endangering our democracy.”
OAN is facing billions of dollars in lawsuits from voting technology companies Dominion and Smartmatic over network coverage of the 2020 election.
