George Takei and William Shatner are among “Star Trek” stars who have paid tribute to Nickel Nichols.

George, who played Hikaru Sulu, tweeted: “I’ll have more to say about the trailblazing, incomparable Nickel Nichols, who shared the bridge with us as Lieutenant Uhura of the USS Enterprise, and who is 89 today. Years passed away. For today, my heart is heavy, my eyes are shining like the stars in the midst of which you are now resting, my dear friend.”
The 85-year-old star posted a photo of herself and Nickel — who was the best lady when she married Brad Altman in 2008 — saluting Vulcan.
He continued: “We lived long and prospered together.”
William shared one of TV’s first interracial screen kisses with Nickel in his roles as Uhura and Captain James T. Kirk, and the 91-year-old actor recognized his friend for his on and off screen work.
He wrote: “I am deeply saddened to hear of Nickel’s passing. She was a beautiful woman and played an admirable character who did so much to redefine social issues here in America and around the world. I will miss him. Sending my love and condolences to his family. Bill (sic)”
Adam Nimoy, son of the late Spock actor Leonard Nimoy, shared a photo of his father with the late actress.
He wrote: “My favorite picture of Dad and Nickel Nichols on set. The importance of Nickel’s legacy cannot be overemphasized. He was loved dearly and will be missed.”
Celia Rose Gooding, who played Uhura in the Paramount+ series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, paid tribute to Michelle and her legacy.
She wrote: “She made room for so many of us. She was a reminder that not only can we reach the stars, but our influence is essential to their survival. Forget moving the tables, she made it! #RIPNichelleNichols ( sic)”
His co-star, Melissa C. Navia – who plays Erica Ortegas – said: “Nickel Nichols…her light will continue to shine. Stronger than ever. Now everyone else and her family rest in peace. K Can’t wait to celebrate her life with what’s to come and all the stories that those who know her best will share.”
Kate Mulgrew, who played the franchise’s first female captain, Captain Catherine Janeway, on ‘Star Trek: Voyager,’ wrote: “Nickel Nichols was the First. She was a trailblazer, who wielded grit, grace, and a grand fire with a flair.” Very challenging road navigated. We are unlikely to see us again. Rest in peace. #NichelleNichols”
Star Trek’s official Twitter account also shared a tribute to the actress, which she described as an “inspiration”.
