Using technology to increase student engagement and retention – FE News

Since the start of the pandemic, teachers have had to adopt new ways of learning to engage their students. Overnight, we saw teachers and students adopt online learning, which accelerated the digital transformation of the education sector.

Ensuring that students continue their studies and sit in the comfort of their homes with fellow students, was a challenge like no other. However, technology has really helped bring education to life.

Although many people are back in the classroom, a hybrid teaching approach is becoming increasingly popular. For this reason, institutes continue to introduce new and innovative technologies to support students’ learning experiences and keep them connected, involved and inspired.

So, with a blended approach to learning, how can technology bring creativity back into the classroom, while also ensuring that students continue to learn and stay engaged?

Modernizing the learning experience with augmented reality and simplification

From old textbooks and teaching materials to formal lectures, the traditional teaching method is not for everyone. In fact, our latest research shows that two out of five people find traditional learning methods boring and half of those surveyed believe they would do more in their studies if the learning experience was more personal and engaging. Would have been successful

In recent years, there have been several technological advancements that provide a more exciting learning experience – including augmented reality (AR) and gamification. These technologies provide students and teachers with a fun and interactive experience, which ultimately brings learning to life.

One of the most attractive elements of gamification is that it satisfies the competitive desire of students by encouraging healthy competition among peers. Similar to learning through play, gamification creates a more memorable and interesting approach to learning, ultimately resulting in greater retention of information.

Bringing learning to life is an essential part of driving curriculum retention rates and increasing engagement. One effective way to do this is with AR technology. Many professional courses, such as dentistry, engineering and nursing, to name just a few, rely on practical experience. However, the move to online learning during the pandemic has deprived many students of this important experience.

By introducing AR and other technology driven solutions in the classroom, students have been able to experience the practical side of learning from the study location of their choice. Our research found that more than half (54%) of students say they learn best through visual aids, so it is important that educational institutions take this into account now that we return to individualized learning. Have come and don’t go back to more ‘traditional’ teaching methods.

Keeping students engaged is one thing, but using technology like AR and gamification can really help improve grades. In fact, research from McKinsey shows that more than 60% of students believe that technology used in the classroom since the pandemic began has improved not only their learning but their grades as well. .

keep communication alive

There is no doubt that an influencing factor for young people seeking to go to university is the social element. A sense of community among peers has been proven by cognitive scientists to enhance human capacity to learn. Studies have shown that a sense of community, combined with social situations and activities that require cooperation, aids in learning ability.

Even though distance learning is increasingly part of the general educational experience, real attention should be paid to building a sense of community among students. Thankfully, technological advancements over the years have enabled us to communicate with each other whenever and wherever, and we need to ensure that technology in education allows students to connect with each other. We know that gamification gives students the opportunity to interact with like-minded people, but it also really helps to increase that community connection. At Immersify Education, we have integrated gamification into the Immersify Dental platform so that learners can connect with like-minded individuals from around the world who are either studying dentistry or interested in the field. This allows users to create a community on the platform, which ultimately enables the learning community to share their learning experiences with each other, regardless of where they are in the world.

What is the future for technology in the classroom?

It may be easy to forget, but no two people learn and retain information in the same way, so the size of education need not be the same to suit all perspectives. Also, when it comes to individuals, one method may work for learning one subject but it may not work for another.

In fact, our research shows that one in five (19%) people are lifelong learners and consistently use a variety of methods to learn new skills – ranging from educational games and quizzes to watching video tutorials and books. Anything can be included till the reading.

This highlights that teachers must continually seek different, more personal, approaches to engage a range of students. This will not only help the student process the information easily, but will also ensure that they learn in a memorable way. Often, personalization is overlooked in education, although it is an important part of the learning experience. For this reason, as technology in this space evolves and adapts, we need to make sure that personalization is considered.

When it comes to where we learn, whether we like it or not, hybrid learning is here to stay. This is the new norm and educational institutions need to ensure that they are using technology to engage the students, while also maintaining the retention rate. I am confident that we will see new technology enter the market to aid students’ learning experiences, while also ensuring that they stay connected with their peers and teachers.

Here at Immersify Education, our platform offers a personalized and inclusive approach to learning. It uses advanced technology, interactive experiences, expert content, and gamified and personalized learning to allow students to achieve the ultimate learning experience. Whether the student is better informed than reading, doing or watching, there are experiences on the Immersify Dental platform that will help them enjoy their learning experience – something that I think all educational institutions should consider.

Ultimately, technology was once nice to have in the classroom, but now it’s a necessity.
